No more Organic Waste is NOW
CAUTO won the European LIFE call for proposals and, with the NOW model, has introduced the social recycling of organic waste from large retailers in the province of Brescia.
PROJECT LIFE10 ENV/EN/404 NOW - NO MORE ORGANIC WASTE
LEADER: Cauto
DURATION: 36 months
PERIOD: OCTOBER 2011 – DECEMBER 2014
NOW is the organic waste management model, proposed by CAUTO, which recovers unsold goods that, because of their quality and hygiene characteristics, can be donated and reused as food resources. The unsorted waste produced by the large retailers (supermarkets and hypermarkets) accounts for about 40% of the total waste produced. The management of this type of waste is economically and logistically burdensome. Organic waste, consisting mainly of food products, remains unsold and discarded for various reasons: packaging, sampling-seasonality, physical standards, change of image, cessation of activity close to the recommended expiry date, launch of a new product, unforeseen and unfavourable weather events, errors in purchasing planning. In traditional waste management models, the organic fraction is not separated from unsorted waste and accounts for about 80% of it. With NOW, this waste component can extend its life cycle by becoming a donation for social purposes or as animal feed, without becoming waste. The project, which started in 2011 and was presented at the Fa la cosa giusta! (Do the right thing!) 2012 edition, concluded with a final conference "Waste. If you know it, you can use it" at ECOmondo 2014.
